Postcard From the Past: Children’s Sayings

by Wyoming Livestock Roundup

By Dick Perue

The sayings of children are always interesting. They give expression to their views of life in such quaint, original words, nearly all of their conversation and remarks are interesting.

There is a freshness about their little observations that is truly charming, and one never tires of hearing them repeated.

Here are a few from a couple of Wyoming newspapers, including the Aug. 2, 1906 issue of the Saratoga Sun.

A lady took her four-year-old son into a parlor where there was a large bear-skin rug spread out on the floor.

The little fellow jumped with delight, exclaiming to his mother, “Mama, just see this bear skin. Somebody peeled it.”

Uncle Frank had a four-year-old nephew with whom he was quite chummy, and they often discussed things in order the quaint opinions of the little fellow might find vent. On one occasion, when the youngster had been to Sunday school, he returned with a paper on which were pictures of a cross and a crown.

Plumping the paper down on his uncle’s knee, he proceeded to ascertain how much his uncle knew about such things.

“Uncle Frank, what is that?” he asked, planting a fat little forefinger on the cross.

“Why, that is a cross,” was the reply.

“Well, what is that?” he asked, and down went the finger on the crown.

To test the youngster’s knowledge, the uncle replied he did not know.

“Why, it’s God’s hat,” responded the youngster triumphantly.

And, now, more from the March 9, 1913 issue of the Cheyenne State Leader.

A new job

Little Billy stood at the window one dark night, just as the street lights were turned on.

After a few minutes, he exclaimed excitedly, “Oh, mama, someone is making holes in the dark.”

Moon in danger

One evening, a tiny girl was walking with her sister and the moon.

Round, full and just rising, it seemed to rest right on the street.

“Oh, look! If the moon don’t get up, it will be run over,” the tiny girl proclaimed.
