Simmental bulls represented well at 2024 Midland Bull Test

Simmental bulls represented the breed well during the 2024 Midland Bull Test in Columbus, Mont. and provided great competition in both the Group 1 Fall Bulls and the Group 2 Spring Bulls.

Fall-born bulls had an average daily gain (ADG) of 3.46 and an average weight per day of age (WDA) of 2.89, collectively. 

The Group 2 Spring Bulls collectively had an ADG of 3.23 and a WDA of 3.10. 

Leaders of both groups in ADG, WDA, Efficiency (Eff) and Midland Bull Test (MBT) Index are listed below.

The Simmental bulls will sell on April 4 as lots 850 through 865.

Group 1 Fall Bull ADG

All of the bulls in Group 1 were consigned by Mallett Simmentals of Lampasas, Texas.

Lot 850 was the leader of the ADG category. Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 3.72, a WDA of 2.70 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 86, YW 130, M 23, RFI 0.35, Eff 105 and MBT 100.

In second place was lot 851, also sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, with an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.89 and EPDs of BW 2.0, WW 86, YW 136, M 26 and MBT 99. No RFI and Eff data were recorded for this bull. 

Lot 852 placed third. A son of ES TNT Unlocked GE49, this bull had an ADG of 3.54, a WDA of 2.90 and has EPDs of BW 0.5, WW 85, YW 132, M 26, RFI -0.49, Eff 103 and MBT 103.

Coming in fourth was lot 853, another son of ES TNT Unlocked GE49 that had an ADG of 3.41, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW -1.3, WW 81, YW 129, M 27, RFI 0.88, Eff 98 and MBT 102.

Rounding out the top five fall-born Simmental bulls was lot 854. Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 2.96, a WDA of 3.06 and has EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 87, YW 127, M 30, RFI -1.74, Eff 98 and MBT 102.

Group 2 Spring Bulls ADG 

The top-ranking Group 2 Spring Simmental ADG bull was lot 857, consigned by Mallett Simmentals and sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, with an ADG of 3.60. This bull had a WDA of 3.20 and has EPDs of BW 2.9, WW 88, YW 134, M 27, RFI 1.41, Eff 97 and MBT 103.

Pulling into the second-place position with an ADG of 3.47 was lot 863, consigned by Heluva Ranch of Meridian, Idaho and sired by W/C Night Watch 84E. This bull had a WDA of 2.99 and has EPDs of BW -0.8, WW 82, YW 121, M 24, RFI 1.81, Eff 106 and MBT 105.

The spring-born Simmental bull placing third was lot 860 with an ADG of 3.38. This bull had a WDA of 3.09 and has EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 77, YW 118, M 25, RFI -0.46, Eff 106 and MBT 103. This bull was sired by TNT Classic J419 and consigned by Mallett Simmentals.

In fourth was lot 864, consigned by Thistledew Land and Cattle of Joilet, Mont. and sired by W/C Loaded Up 1119Y. This bull had an ADG of 3.33, a WDA of 3.37 and has EPDs of BW 2, WW 76, YW 124, M 20, RFI 1.04, Eff 96 and MBT 101. 

With an ADG of 3.29, lot 856 and lot 865 had a two-way tie for fifth place. Lot 856 is a son of DRG Prochorus 18H, consigned by Mallett Simmentals and had a WDA of 3.18. He has EPDs of BW 1, WW 88, YW 133, M 24, RFI .20, Eff 99 and MBT 102.

Consigned by Thistledew Land and Cattle, lot 865, another son of W/C Loaded Up 1119Y, had an ADG of 3.29, a WDA of 3.63 and has EPDs of BW 0.1, WW 74, YW 115, M 20, RFI .68, Eff 109 and MBT 106.

Group 1 Fall Bulls WDA

Lot 854 had the highest WDA of the Group 1 fall-born Simmental bulls, with a WDA of 3.06. A son of DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 2.96 and has EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 87, YW 127, M 30, RFI -1.74, Eff 98 and MBT 102.

A son of ES TNT Unlocked GE49, lot 852 placed second with a WDA of 2.90. He had an ADG of 3.54 and has EPDs of BW 0.5, WW 85, YW 132, M 26, RFI -0.49, Eff 103 and MBT 103.

With a WDA of 2.89, lot 851 secured third place. Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 3.67 and has EPDs of BW 2, WW 86, YW 136, M 26 and MBT 99. No RFI and Eff data was recorded for this bull.

Coming in fourth again was lot 853, sired by ES TNT Unlocked GE49, with a WDA of 2.88. This bull had an ADG of 3.67 and has EPDs of BW -1.3, WW 81, YW 129, M 27, RFI 0.88, Eff 98 and MBT 102.

Next was lot 850, sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, rounding out the top-five bulls in the WDA category with a WDA of 2.70. He had an ADG of 3.72 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 86, YW 130, M 23, RFI 0.35, Eff 105 and MBT 100.

Group 2 Spring Bulls WDA

Lot 865 was the leader of the Group 2 Spring Bulls WDA category, posting a 3.63 WDA. Sired by W/C Loaded Up 1119Y, this bull had an ADG of 3.29 and has EPDs of BW 0.1, WW 74, YW 115, M 20, RFI .68, Eff 109 and MBT 106.

Pulling into second-place was lot 864 with a WDA of 3.37. Another son of W/C Loaded Up 1119Y, this bull had an ADG of 3.33 and has EPDs of BW 2, WW 76, YW 124, M 20, RFI 1.04, Eff 96 and MBT 101.

Securing a tie for third place with a WDA of 3.20 were lots 857 and 858.

Lot 857, a son of DRG Prochorus 18H, had an ADG of 3.60, with EPDs of BW 2.9, WW 88, YW 134, M 27, RFI 1.41, Eff 97 and MBT 103. 

Completing the leaderboard was lot 858, another son of DRG Prochorus 18H, with an ADG of 2.97 and EPDs of BW 1.8, WW 87, YW 133, M 28, RFI -0.62, Eff 103 and MBT 103.

Group 1 Fall Bulls Eff

At the top of the leaderboard again, with an Eff of 105, was lot 850. Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 3.72, a WDA of 2.70 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 86, YW 130, M 23, RFI 0.35 and MBT 100.

Lot 852 was second again with an Eff of 103. This son of ES TNT Unlocked GE49 had an ADG of 3.54, a WDA of 2.90 and has EPDs of BW 0.5, WW 85, YW 132, M 26, RFI -0.49 and MBT 103.

Tying for third with an Eff of 98 were lots 853 and 854.

Lot 853 was sired by ES TNT Unlocked GE49 and had an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW -1.3, WW 81, YW 129, M 27, RFI 0.88 and MBT 102.

Lot 854 was sired by DRG Prochorus 18H and had an ADG of 2.96, a WDA of 3.06 and has EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 87, YW 127, M 30, RFI -1.74 and MBT 102.

Group 2 Spring Bulls Eff 

Lot 865 was the Eff leader in the Group 2 Spring Bulls, posting an Eff of 109. This son of W/C Loaded Up 1119Y had an ADG of 3.29, a WDA of 3.63 and has EPDs of BW 0.1, WW 74, YW 115, M 20, RFI 0.68 and MBT 106.

Sired by TNT Classic J419, lot 860, with an Eff of 106, took second place. This bull had an ADG of 3.38, a WDA of 3.09 and has EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 77, YW 118, M 25, RFI -0.46 and MBT 103. 

Coming in third was lot 858, posting an Eff of 103. A son of DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 2.97, a WDA of 3.20 and has EPDs of BW 1.8, WW 87, YW 133, M 28, RFI -0.62 and MBT 103.

Finishing in fourth place with an Eff of 100 was lot 863, sired by W/C Night Watch 84E. This bull had an ADG of 3.47, a WDA of 2.99 and has EPDs of BW -0.8, WW 82, YW 121, M 24, RFI 1.81 and MBT 105.

Rounding out Group 2 Spring Bulls leaders with an Eff of 99 were lots 855, 856 and 859.

Sired by TNT Expedient E338, lot 855 had an ADG of 3.15, a WDA of 2.70 and has EPDs of BW 1.6, WW 71, YW 113, M 28, RFI 1.23 and MBT 98.

Lot 856 is another son of DRG Prochorus 18H. This bull had an ADG of 3.29, a WDA of 3.18 and has EPDs of BW 1, WW 88, YW 133, M 24, RFI 0.20 and MBT 102.

Concluding the leaderboard was lot 859. Sired by Mallett H25, this bull had an ADG of 3.06, a WDA of 2.99 and has EPDs of BW 2.5, WW 78, YW 117, M 23, RFI -0.44 and MBT 99.

Group 1 Fall Bulls MBT Index

Lot 852 was the reigning leader in the Group 1 Fall Bull MBT Index category, with an MBT of 103. Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 3.72, a WDA of 2.70 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 86, YW 130, M 23, RFI 0.35 and Eff 105.

A two-way tie for second place was between lot 853 and lot 854 with an Eff of 102.

Lot 853, sired by ES TNT Unlocked GE49, had an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW -1.3, WW 81, YW 129, M 27, RFI 0.88 and Eff of 98.

Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, lot 854 had an ADG of 2.96, a WDA of 3.06 and has EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 87, YW 127, M 30, RFI -1.74 and Eff 98.

Landing in fourth place with an MBT of 100 was lot 850. Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 3.72, a WDA of 2.70 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 86, YW 130, M 23, RFI 0.35 and Eff 105.

Lot 851, with an MBT of 99, closed out the top five bulls. Sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.89 and has EPDs of BW 2, WW 86, YW 136, M 26 and MBT 99. No RFI and Eff data were recorded for this bull.

Group 2 Spring Bulls MBT Index

Lot 865 placed first in MBT Index with an MBT of 106. This son of W/C Loaded Up 1119Y had an ADG of 3.29, a WDA of 3.63 and has EPDs of BW 0.1, WW 74, YW 115, M 20, RFI 0.68 and Eff 106.

Lot 863 landed in second place with an MBT of 105. Sired by W/C Night Watch 84E, this bull had an ADG of 3.47, a WDA of 2.99 and has EPDs of BW -0.8, WW 82, YW 121, M 24, RFI 1.81 and Eff 100.

In a three-way tie for third place were lots 857, 858 and 860, all with an MBT of 103. 

Lot 857, sired by DRG Prochorus 18H, had an ADG of 3.60, a WDA of 3.20 and has EPDs of BW 2.9, WW 88, YW 134, M 27, RFI 1.41 and Eff 97.

Lot 858, another son of DRG Prochorus 18H, had an ADG of 2.97, a WDA of 3.20 and has EPDs of BW 1.8, WW 87, YW 133, M 28, RFI -0.62 and Eff 103.

Placing in fifth was lot 856 with an MBT of 102. Another son of DRG Prochorus 18H, this bull had an ADG of 3.29, a WDA of 3.18 and has EPDs of BW 1, WW 88, YW 133, M 24, RFI 0.20 and Eff 99.

Midland Bull Test Awards 

Sale bulls in each breed qualify for Midland Bull Test Performance Awards, based on performance, semen evaluation and soundness. Breeds with less than 30 head and all fall bulls qualify for honors as the MBT High Indexing Bull and High Efficiency Bull. 

As of March 11, pending semen results and registration documents, the High Indexing Simmental Bull was lot 865 with an MBT of 106 and the Reserve Indexing Simmental Bull was lot 863 with an MBT of 105.

With an Eff of 109, lot 865 also received the High Efficiency Simmental Bull Award and lot 860, with an Eff of 106, was the Reserve High Efficiency Simmental Bull.
