Red Angus spring bulls perform well at the 2024 MBT

Red Angus bulls made an impressive showing at this year’s Midland Bull Test. 

Collectively, the Red Angus bulls had an average daily gain (ADG) of 3.12 and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 2.86.

Leaders in ADG, WDA, Efficiency (Eff) and Midland Bull Test (MBT) Index are listed below.

The Red Angus bulls will sell on April 4 in lots 600 through 615. 

Group 2 Red Angus Spring Bulls ADG 

Dahlman Diamond D Ranch of Dutton, Mont. secured the top-place position with two bulls in the Red Angus Spring Bull ADG category with lot 614 and lot 612.

Lot 614 had an ADG of 3.83 and was sired by 9 Mile Senator 7175. This bull had a WDA of 2.81 and has EPDs of BW -0.3, WW 58, YW 90, M 22, RFI -0.22, Eff 108 and MBT 107.

Lot 612, sired by Laso Red Wave C85J, had an ADG of 3.69, a WDA of 3.61 and has EPDs of BW -0.1, WW 73, YW 119, M 26, RFI 0.11, Eff 100 and MBT 106.

Consigned by 34 Farms of Medicine Lake, Mont., lot 604 had an ADG of 3.42. Sired by 5L Genuine 1603-195C, this bull had a WDA of 3.15 and has EPDs of BW -2.5, WW 81, YW 133, M 30, RFI 1.92, Eff 100 and MBT 107.

Rounding out the top five in a two-way tie is lot 615 and lot 611, both reporting an ADG of 3.38.

Lot 615, a son of HXC Big Sur 0002H, had a WDA of 2.91 and has EPDs of BW 0.7, WW 73, YW 115, M 32, RFI 4.43, Eff 86 and MBT 99. This bull was consigned by Dahlman Diamond D Ranch.

Lot 611, sired by Red Six Mile Sakic 832S, followed with a WDA of 2.95 and EPDs of BW 1.1, WW 72, YW 109, M 23, RFI -0.18, Eff 102 and MBT 103. He was consigned by Gnech Farms of Malin, Ore.

Group 2 Red Angus Spring Bulls WDA 

The Group 2 Red Angus Spring Bulls leader was lot 602 with a WDA of 3.28. Sired by NCRA Rolling Thunder 2034 and consigned by TJB Reds of Powell, this bull had an ADG of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW -1.7, WW 63, YW 101, M 25, RFI -1.87, Eff 106 and MBT 103. 

Coming in second was lot 604 with a WDA of 3.15. Sired by 5L Genuine 1603-195C, this bull had an ADG of 3.42 and has EPDs of BW -2.5, WW 81, YW 133, M 30, RFI 1.92, Eff 100 and MBT 107.

In third place was lot 600 with a WDA of 3.01. This bull was sired by DKK Montana’s Domain 9142 and consigned by TJB Reds. He had an ADG of 3.51 and has EPDs of BW 0.1, WW 72, YW 114, M 27, RFI 4.48, Eff 82 and MBT 94. 

Placing fourth was lot 611 with a WDA of 2.95. Sired by Red Six Mile Sakic 832S, he has EPDs of BW 1.1, WW 72, YW 109, M 23, RFI -0.18, Eff 102 and MBT 103. He had an ADG of 3.38.

Finishing in the top five was lot 612 with a WDA of 2.90. Sired by Laso Red Wave C85J, this bull had an ADG of 3.69 and has EPDs of BW -0.1, WW 73, YW 119, M 26, RFI 0.11, Eff 100 and MBT 106.

Group 2 Red Angus Spring Bulls Eff 

Consigned by TJB Reds, lot 601 secured the top spot in the Group 2 Red Angus Spring Bulls Eff category with an Eff of 110. The son of Stra Rentless, this bull had an ADG of 2.66, a WDA of 2.92 and has EPDs of BW -3.1, WW 59, YW 86, M 32, RFI -3.84 and MBT 98.

Pulling into second place with an Eff of 108 was lot 614. Lot 614 was sired by 9 Mile Senator 7175. This bull had an ADG of 3.83, a WDA of 2.81 and has EPDs of BW -0.3, WW 58, YW 90, M 22, RFI -0.22 and MBT 107.

Sired by Laso Red Wave C85J and consigned by Dahlman Diamond D Ranch, lot 613 finished in a two-way tie for third with an Eff of 106. This bull had an ADG of 3.33, a WDA 2.86 and has EPDs of BW -0.4, WW 70, YW 111, M 28, RFI 0.22 and MBT 105.

Sharing the third-place win was lot 602 with an Eff of 106. Sired by NCRA Rolling Thunder 2034, this bull had an ADG of 2.88, a WDA of 3.28 and has EPDs of BW -1.7, WW 63, YW 101, M 25, RFI -1.87 and MBT 103.

Concluding the leaderboard is lot 610 with an Eff of 104. Consigned by Gragg Farms of Boone, N.C. and sired by RReds Seneca 731C, this bull had an ADG of 3.11, a WDA of 2.70 and has EPDs of BW -1.1, WW 74, YW 114, M 19, RFI -0.07 and MBT 101.

Group 2 Red Angus Spring Bulls MBT Index

Sharing the first-place finish in the Red Angus Spring Bulls MBT Index category with an MBT of 107 were lots 604 and 614.

Lot 604 was sired by 5L Genuine 1603-195C and had an ADG of 3.42, a WDA of 3.15 and has EPDs of BW -2.5, WW 81, YW 133, M 30, RFI 1.92 and Eff 100.

Lot 614 was sired by 9 Mile Senator 7175 and had an ADG of 3.83, a WDA of 2.81 and has EPDs of BW -0.3, WW 58, YW 90, M 22, RFI -0.22 and Eff 108.

Moving into third place was lot 612 with an MBT of 106. Sired by Laso Red Wave C85J, he had an ADG of 3.69, a WDA of 2.90 and has EPDs of BW -0.1, WW 73, YW 119, M 26, RFI 0.11 and Eff 100.

Lot 613 secured the fourth-place spot with an MBT of 105. Sired by Laso Red Wave C85J, this bull had an ADG of 3.33, a WDA 2.86 and has EPDs of BW -0.4, WW 70, YW 111, M 28, RFI 0.22 and Eff 106.

For a two-way tie in fifth were lot 602 and lot 611 with an MBT of 103.

Sired by NCRA Rolling Thunder 2034, lot 602 had an ADG of 2.88, a WDA of 3.28 and has EPDs of BW -1.7, WW 63, YW 101, M 25, RFI -1.87 and Eff 106.

Lot 611, sired by Red Six Mile Sakic 832S, followed with an ADG of 3.38, a WDA of 2.95 and EPDs of BW 1.1, WW 72, YW 109, M 23, RFI -0.18 and Eff 102.

Midland Bull Test Awards 

Sale bulls in each breed qualify for Midland Bull Test Performance Awards, based on performance, semen evaluation and soundness. Breeds with less than 30 head and all fall bulls qualify for honors as the MBT High Indexing Bull and High Efficiency Bull. 

As of March 11, pending semen results and registration documents, two bulls took home the High Indexing Red Angus Bull Award – lot 604 with an MBT of 107 and lot 614 with an MBT of 107. The Reserve Indexing Red Angus Bull was lot 612 with an MBT of 106.

With an Eff of 110, lot 601 received the High Efficiency Red Angus Bull Award and lot 614, with an Eff of 108, was the Reserve Efficiency Red Angus Bull.
