Wyo Beef Cattle Improvement Association releases final test report for 31st annual event

by Wyoming Livestock Roundup

This year marks the 31st Annual  Wyoming Beef Cattle Improvement Association (WBCIA) Bull Test and Sale. There is a really good selection of bulls this year and should provide buyers with plenty of options to find the bull to fit their needs. This year’s group of bulls consigned to the 2015-16 WBCIA Bull Test were weighed off test in February. The consigners to the sale have picked the top bulls from their respective herds to participate in the test.

This year’s sale offers 88 bulls that are eligible for the sale on March 11 at the Pingetzer sale facility.

Bull test

The WBCIA Bull Test is located at the Pingetzer Bull and Heifer Development Center near Shoshoni. In addition to our traditional consignors, we are seeing some new participation and some great consigned bulls.  All the consigners have taken the time to select the top bulls from their respective herds.

A performance test allows for comparison between all the bulls as they have all been treated and fed the same and allows the top performing bulls to float to the top.  This sale represents the “Best of the Best,” and we encourage everyone to stop by the Test and take a look at this year’s consignment.

The feed program reflects the desired bull condition of buyers while expressing the potential of the bulls on test.

The performance from this year’s set of bulls was excellent, with an impressive 3.82 pounds per day gain, with an average of 3.04 weight per day of age (WDA), which is higher than last year’s Test.  Additionally, this year’s set of bulls are as healthy, sound and fertile as any set of bulls that have been on test.

Bulls available for purchase in this year’s sale include 64 registered Angus and 24 registered Red Angus.

Results

Group performance over the Test included 3.93 pounds per day gain and 3.07 WDA for registered Angus and 3.82 pounds per day gain and 3.04 WDA for registered Red Angus.

The top gaining bull on test this year was lot 460, a registered Angus bull sired by EXAR Complete 1887B who gained a really impressive 5.06 pounds per day and a 3.61 pounds of WDA.  He was closely followed by a registered Angus bull, lot 458 also sired by EXAR Complete 1887B, gaining 4.94 pounds day with a 3.59 WDA. Both bulls were consigned by Steve Smith Angus of Lehi, Utah.

Also finishing with a 4.94 pounds per day and a 3.33 WDA was bull 431, sired by Lone Star Advantage E753 and consigned by Klein Angus of Wheatland.

Additionally, all three of these top-gaining bulls had a PAP score of 43 or lower.

The top-performing registered Red Angus bulls were lot 519 sired by Lakeview Hardrock 207 and lot 511 sired by Six Outlook A11, gaining 4.58 and 4.35 pounds per day, respectively. Both were consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch of Shoshoni.

The highest WDA for the registered Red Angus was bull lot 515 sired by Six Blaze Z22 and consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch. He showed a 3.29 WDA.

Sale bulls

All bulls have been ear-notched and have been found to be PI negative (PIN) for BVD.

Also, all the bulls that qualify for the sale will have passed a breeding soundness exam (BSE).

Ultrasound information is included in this year’s catalog and will be available on a supplemental sheet the day of the sale.

PAP testing has also been performed on the bulls qualifying for this year’s sale, with the results available the day of the sale.  A PAP score of 43 or lower is generally considered acceptable for cattle that spend considerable time at elevation above 7,000 feet.  This year’s set of bulls proved to be very acceptable for high altitude, with 42 Angus and 15 Red Angus scoring a 41 or lower.

New to the catalog this year is a four- and five-star calving ease designation.  Hopefully, this will help producers select the bull with both growth potential and calving ease for heifers.

Bulls will be fed until April 5 at no charge to the purchaser. A $50 discount off of the sale price will be received if the bulls are taken home on sale day. Bulls can be fed longer at the expense of the purchaser.

Please stop by the Pingetzer Bull and Heifer Development Center any time to evaluate the bulls prior to the sale.  If you are interested in a particular bull, contact us, and we will try to answer any questions that you have or put you in contact with the breeder.

Additional information and test reports may be obtained by contacting either Bob and Paige Pingetzer at 307-856-4401 or Scott Lake at 307-460-8129.

Be sure to join us for the sale on March 11. The sale starts at 1 p.m. at the Pingetzer test facility between Shoshoni and Riverton.
