30th Annual WBCIA Bull Test and Sale reports final 120-day test results

by Wyoming Livestock Roundup

By Scott Lake

This year marks the 30th Annual Wyoming Beef Cattle Improvement Association (WBCIA) Bull Test and Sale. There is a really good selection of bulls this year, which should provide buyers with plenty of options to find the bull to fit their needs.

This year’s group of bulls consigned to the 2014-15 WBCIA Bull Test were weighed off test Feb. 23. The consigners to the sale have picked the top bulls from their respective herds to participate in the test. The top 70 percent of bulls, 110 bulls this year, from the test are eligible for the sale on April 4 at the Pingetzer Bull and Heifer Development Center near Shoshoni.

Test methods

The WBCIA Bull Test is located at the Pingetzer Bull and Heifer Development Center. In addition to our traditional consignors, we are seeing new participation and some great bulls consigned. We would encourage everyone to stop by the test and take a look at this year’s consignment.

The feed program reflects the desired bull condition of the buyers while expressing the potential of the bulls on test. Therefore, this year’s group of bulls finished the 120-day test with an average daily gain (ADG) of three pounds per day and an average of 2.84 weight per day of age (WDA), which is higher than last years.

Additionally, this year’s set of bulls are as healthy, sound and fertile as any set of bulls that have been on test. Bulls available for purchase in this year’s sale include 79 registered Angus and 24 registered Red Angus.

Results

Group performance over the 120-day test included 2.99 pounds per day and 2.83 WDA for registered Angus and 3.01 pounds per day and 2.85 WDA for registered Red Angus.

The top gaining bull on test this year was lot 450, a registered Angus bull sired by Coleman Missing Link 9246 and consigned by Steve Smith Angus of Lehi, Utah. The bull gained an impressive 3.97 pounds per day.

He was closely followed by a registered Angus bull, lot 392 sired by Basin Excitement, consigned by Klein Angus of Wheatland. This bull gained 3.84 pounds per day and had the highest WDA at 3.39 pounds.

The top performing registered Red Angus bulls were lot 519, sired by LSF Outlook 0410x and lot 529, sired by Six Red Blaze Z22. Both bulls gained 3.73 pounds per day, and both were consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch of Shoshoni.

The highest WDA for the registered Red Angus was bull 515, sired by Six Blaze Z22 and consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch at 3.29 WDA.

Sire groups

The top ADG sire group was lots 469, 470 and 484 sired by a registered Angus bull, High Prime 4037, consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch.

The top WDA sire group in the registered Angus group were lots 459, 460 and 462 sired by EXAR Complete 1887B, consigned by Steve Smith Angus.

Sale requirements

All bulls have been ear-notched and have been found to be PI negative (PIN) for bovine viral diarrhea (BVD).

Also, all the bulls that qualify for the sale will have passed a breeding soundness exam. Ultrasound information is included in this year’s catalog and will be available on a supplemental sheet the day of the sale.

PAP testing has also been performed on the bulls qualifying for this year’s sale, with the results available the day of the sale.
