Annual tie drive underway

by Wyoming Livestock Roundup

According to an article in the May 26, 1938 issue of  The Saratoga Sun the “Annual tie drive is due here soon.”

In part the news item continued, “The annual drive of the Wyoming Timber Company, the big drive of the Medicine Bow Forest, is now well on its way down Douglas Creek to the Platte River and Fort Steele, according to reports from Laramie this week.

“The drive started early last week, and Saturday ties were squeaking and jamming the narrows of Douglas creek. The drive – by far the most colorful of this region – will deliver 300,000 sticks to Fort Steele for loading.

“A Fox Movietone camera crew is reported to be on location at the narrows at Devil’s Gate along Douglas Creek, where pictures are being taken of the ties as they squeeze through the gate.

“About 40 men are working on the drive, which will take about six weeks to complete. The timber is cut in the area around Keystone and is floated about 90 miles before reaching the railroad loading point at Fort Steele.

“The other drive from the Medicine Bow Forest, down the Laramie River to Laramie, is said to be near its destination.”
