Wyoming Beef Cattle Improvement Association bull test to sell 110 bulls in 28th year
This year marks the 28th anniversary of the WBCIA Bull Test and Sale. The current trend of rising production costs makes bull selection that much more important. Purchasing bulls that have been performance tested provides objective, comprehensive data that includes EPDs, ultrasound measures, fertility checks, PAP, ratios and actual individual performance comparisons on test. The results provide ranchers with the tools needed to make informed decisions.
It is a great time to add young yearling bulls with superior genetics to your herd. This group of bulls is the most fertile and sound group of bulls ever sold during this test. These bulls are in good working condition and are ready to go for the upcoming breeding season. Whether you are looking for a bull to put on your mature cows that will add growth to your calves or a heifer bull that will combine calving ease with growth, we are confident that you will find a bull to fit your needs at a reasonable price.
This year, the group of bulls consigned to the 2012-13 WBCIA Bull Test were weighed off test Feb. 22. As with previous years, only the top 70 percent of the comparison groups will be sold in the WBCIA Bull Test Sale on April 6. The WBCIA bull test and sale is located at the Pingetzer Bull and Heifer Development Center near Shoshoni. Bulls that will be sold this year include 85 registered Angus, 21 registered Red Angus and four Angus/Gelbvieh bulls.
In addition to our traditional consignors, we are seeing some new participation and some great consigned bulls. We would encourage everyone to stop by the test and take a look at this year’s consignment. This year’s group of bulls to be sold finished the 120-day test gaining 3.34 pounds per day, with an average of 2.94 WDA.
Results
The top gaining bull on test this year was lot 260, a registered Angus bull sired by Sitz Upside 547W, consigned by Robert Buline of Crowheart and gaining 4.18 pounds per day over the 120 day test.
He was followed by a registered Angus bull, lot 250 sired by S A V Pioneer 7301, consigned by Earhart Farms of Powell and a registered Angus bull, lot 198, sired by LCC New Standard, consigned by Mill Iron D Ranch, both gaining 4.03 pounds per day.
Group performance over the 120-day test included 3.34 pounds per day for the registered Angus division, 3.38 pounds per day for the registered Red Angus division and 3.34 for the Angus/Gelbvieh cross bulls.
The 85 registered Angus bulls to be sold finished this year’s test with an average WDA of 2.95. The top performing bulls in the registered Angus group Sitz Upside 547W, consigned by Robert Buline of Crowheart, gaining 4.18 pounds per day, followed by lot 250 sired by S A V Pioneer 7301, consigned by Earhart Farms of Powell and lot 198 sired by LCC New Standard, consigned by Mill Iron D Ranch, both gaining 4.03 pounds per day, and were also the top overall performing bulls, as mentioned above. The bull consigned by Robert Buline (lot 250) was also the High Indexing Registered Angus calving ease bull on this years test.
The top WDA registered Angus bull this year was lot 253, a REB Freedom son born March 23, 2012 and consigned by Harrison Angus Ranch of Boyd, Mont. with a WDA of 3.72.
The top ADG sire group in this years registered Angus division was Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch, with lots 275, 284 and 288 sired by Bovagene Shadow 914 with an average ADG of 3.69.
The top WDA sire group in this year’s registered Angus division was Jim Buline, with lots 256, 257 and 258 sired by H A R B Grid Star 296 with an average WDA of 3.15.
Red Angus results
The 21 registered Red Angus bulls finished with a ADG of 3.38 pounds per day and a WDA average of 2.85. These bulls were led by the top gaining and also the top indexing calving ease registered Red Angus bull lot 316 consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch of Shoshoni. This Jan. 27 born Six Zebu ZO IX ZO Z8 son gained 3.96 over the 120-day test with a 2.72 WDA.
The top ADG sire group was consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch of Shoshoni, with lots 305, 308 and 311 sired by Larson Sundown 826 with an ADG of 3.51. The top WDA sire group was also consigned by Pingetzer’s Six Iron Ranch with lots 315, 320 and 326 with a WDA of 2.98
Angus/Gelbvieh cross
A new consigner to this year’s test, Mike White of Laramie, consigned the four Angus/Gelbvieh cross bulls. These April born bulls averaged 3.34 ADG and a 3.18 WDA, led by lot 46 with an ADG of 3.68 and lot 41 with a 3.37 WDA, both sired by a registered Angus bull S Chisum 6175.
Complete test
All bulls have been ear-notched and have been found to be PI negative (PIN) for BVD. Also, all the bulls that qualify for the sale will have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam. Ultrasound information is included in this year’s catalog. PAP testing will also be performed on the bulls qualifying for this year’s sale, with the results available the day of the sale. Similar to last year’s sale, a pre-sale social starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. on April 5 at the Pingetzer Bull and Heifer Development Center.
